TOP 8 PACKAGING TIPS
- If you declare a weight and/or count on a bakery item package, both must be accurate. We suggest using count only for items such as muffins and cookies.
- If baked items are sold without being prepackaged (bread loaves, pies and cakes on racks or behind counters), they do not need a declared weight. Packaged breads, pies, brownies and cakes MUST be sold by weight according to Handbook 130.
- Bread baked on premises has been short weight in the past. We strongly suggest you check the baked weight of the bread to ensure accuracy.
- Check your packaging periodically to determine if the tare weight has changed.
- Make sure new product codes are properly programmed by performing random checks.
- Ensure your system is deducting tare at the checkout for items such as coffee, grapes and candy bags.
- Meat managers should ensure that the tare is correct for the package being used.
- Deli counters should also check for proper tare and ensure that their staff are trained to know whether the tare includes the container lid or not.
