CORPORATIONS GIVE GENEROUSLY TO AZ STUDENTS

Giving generously has become a major tradition among participants in the annual celebration of Arizona Weights and Measures Week.

Approximately 500 students received bags containing a wide array of gift items from participating stores, The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Phoenix Cardinals, and the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures.

The students were treated to tours of areas they normally didn’t see, such as the produce coolers, meat preparation and bag-making areas, and in the case of Food City, students received an up-close tour of the tortilla machines – complete with a free, hot, freshly made flour tortilla.

Each store provided cloth shopping bags, low-sugar treats and a number of gifts. Other items included:

  • Pencils, rulers and notepad paper, compliments of the Diamondbacks and Clear Channel radio.
  • Gift cards, usually in the amount of $5, that students or their families could redeem at a later date.
  • A commemorative Super Bowl XLII t-shirt, compliments of the Arizona Cardinals.
  • A book bag, pencils and washable tattoo from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
  • Several items provided by Weights and Measures, including a ruler/magnifier, a refrigerator magnet, and a wallet-sized reference card that can be used to covert different measurements.
  • Teachers were given special bags that included extra school supplies, including pencils and note paper.

We greatly appreciated the generosity shown by our corporate sponsors, said Seth Mones, Acting director of Weights and Measures. “These items provided vital support to Arizona’s schools at a time when money is tight.”

And the kids especially enjoyed the items they received.

“Thank you for the goodies,” said “your friend,” Fernando Salas of Carver Elementary School in Yuma. “You guys are so cool!”
